Granny Square

I have seen granny square patterns that start with a chain 4, 5, or 6 in a circle. I prefer to start with a chain 4.

yarn over, insert hook into 4th chain from the hook, work dc.
Work another dc in same space. Counting the first chain 3 as a dc, you have a 3 dc group.
 Chain 2
Work 3 dc in same space.
 Chain 2
Work another 3 dc group in the same space.
Chain 2.
Work another 3 dc group. You now have 4 3 dc groups.
 Chain 2
Now is a good time to work in the beginning tail.
I just pull it through the backs of the dc
 And repeat around
 And repeat
Going back to where we had just made a chain 2, join to top of beginning chain 3.
Slip stitch in the 2 dc.
Slip stitch into first chain 2 space.
Chain 3
Round 2: chain 3 counts as first dc. In the same space, work 2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc. *Chain 2. In next space, work 3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc. Repeat from * around. Chain 2.
Join in top of beginning chain 3. You have 8 3 dc groups.
 Round 3: chain 3
In same space, work 2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc. In next space work 3 dc.
Work around, with 2 3 dc groups in each corner, 1 3 dc group on the sides and a chain 2 space between each dc group. Join.
Round 4: chain 3 for first dc. Work 2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc in first corner.
Work around as for round 3, with  a 3 dc group in each of the 2 chain 2 spaces on each side.
You can cut the yarn and finish off after each round. These were 2 rounds each of different colors. I have a LOT of left over yarn, so I'm in the process of making a granny square afghan of left over yarn.
